Precipitated barium sulphate is a white amorphous powder with a relative density of 4.50 (15 ?) and a melting point of 1,580 ?. Due to its high refractive index (1.63 to 1.65), it exhibits a white color and has a certain opacity. It is almost insoluble in water, ethanol, and acid, but can dissolve in hot sulfuric acid.
